Another sign of our working towards self reliance is the buying of the new Bishop’s car. In 1998 when he was ordained the Church of Botswana bought a car for the bishop. Now after almost ten years, it was time to replace the old car. This time, the onus rested only on the Catholics of the Vicariate of Francistown. A committee was formed by the leaders of the Pastoral Councils to make sure that a new car was bought for the bishop. The committee went to work and after almost two years, a new VW Jetta was bought and presented to the bishop on day of the Chrism Mass in Francistown, March 15th 2008.
The buying of the bishop’s car is a good example of educating the local church in self reliance. It is a step in taking ownership of the church and not be dependent solely on the assistance of outside support.
