The Christian Life Community (CLC) is an international sodality with headquarters in Rome. One may look at it as an associate body of the Society of Jesus – the Jesuits. Its life and charism is based on the Ignatian Spirituality. It is a sodality established to help young people in their day to day Christian Living.
They have a communal lifestyle, caring for all the community members. CLC has an apostolic life of prayer and service in the Church. In their daily life they teach catechism, visit the sick, the needy, the destitute, and the prisons to share what they have and are. This is strengthened by their annual eight day retreat coupled with monthly recollections and formation workshops. Unlike religious institutes the members make a temporary commitment to live an Apostolic Life of prayer and service to humankind. Individual members look forward to the day when they would be able to make perpetual commitment after a thirty day retreat.
It was introduced into Botswana in 1980. This was at a time when there was an apartheid regime in South Africa and Jesuit CLC chaplain from Zambia was looking for a place to hold their Regional youth conference. He contacted Sr. Zora an Ursuline Sister who had worked in Zambia to help him find an avenue for CLC youth regional conference in Botswana. In the following year, after the said conference, Sr. Zora was invited to attend the World CLC Youth Conference in Rome which was held in Assisi. On her return she shared her experiences with the then Bishop Murphy who gave her his blessings to go ahead and initiate CLC in Botswana. The initial group was formed in Serowe with the youth of St. Vincent De Paul Society. Since then, CLC has spread throughout the country. In the Vicariate of Francistown, there are seven communities in seven parishes.
The growth of the Christian Life Community in Botswana has been very gradual. One may attribute this to the challenges and demands of its charism. Though many see it as a sodality for youth, this may not be true. It is a young adult group with married, single and single parents. Its life is a life of commitment and dedication to God and church.
