Mahalapye - Kanamo Centre

In 1973 Fr Cosmas Donnelly, CP. was appointed to Mahalapye to establish a catechetical training centre in the village.

In 1975 an accommodation block, consisting of 10 small bedrooms, toilet facilities, a dining room and kitchen was completed.

In 1982 Sr. Frances took responsibility for Kanamo Centre. Gradually she widened the scope of Kanamo  Center to embrace training for the various ministries. These included Sunday Service without a Priest, Eucharistic Ministers, Readers and Funeral Leaders as well as the Biblical Apostolate.

1994 – 2008

This transition marked a new stage of development of Kanamo.  With the arrival of Fr. Gabriel came the Sisters of Calvary, a local congregation from Botswana.

Fr. Gabriel undertook upgrading of the facilities and erecting new buildings. A new initiative at this time was the introduction of a language course at Kanamo for new personnel arriving in Botswana. This programme was designed and implemented by Fr. Ireneo Barreto, SVD.

In 2001 Sr. Rosa took over the administration of Kanamo.

The focus now shifted to make Kanamo self reliant financially by offering the facilities to Government groups, NGO’s as well as other churches.

Kanamo continues to be used for on-going formation in the faith for both laity and religious.

In the pipeline is the building of a large hall and new accommodation block to cater for increased demands.

From its simple beginnings Kanamo continues to be a vital channel of life within the Vicariate.
