The Sacred Heart Sodality was started in Poland by Father Francis in 1888.  It was introduced to South Africa by Father Gerald Wolpert the Abbot of Mariannhill. He founded the first group of the sodality in Mariannhill in 1895. Its spirit was one of prayer and concern for the poor. From this humble beginning the sodality has spread throughout Southern Africa.

In Botswana the sodality was introduced by Mr. Anthony Mothibi in 1982 when he returned home from living in South Africa. He had become a member of the sodality while there. He recruited ten men to start the sodality in Botswana. After four years, the group received its first female members at Gabane.  By the year 1990 the sodality was showing signs of growth and vibrancy as people joined it. It was officially called the sodality of the Sacred Heart. At present, the sodality has spread to all corners of the country.

In the Vicariate of Francistown, the Sodality of the Sacred Heart stands on its own as an independent church organization. It has its own leadership structure apart from that of the diocese of Gaborone. The patron saint of the sodality is St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

We have members of the Sacred Heart Sodality in the following parishes:- Francistown, Palapye, Mahalapye, Selebi-Phikwe, Shoshong, Tutume, Bobonong, Masunga, Orapa and Sebina.
